As Diwali festivities unfold, residents of Delhi-NCR are experiencing a mix of light fog and heavy smog since morning, leading to discomfort such as eye irritation and breathing difficulties. Reports indicate that the air quality in the capital began to decline sharply late Sunday evening, with several areas plunging from 'very poor' to 'severe' levels by nightfall.
Record AQI Levels Reported
Areas like Anand Vihar and Wazirpur recorded AQI levels exceeding 400 on Monday morning, while out of 38 monitoring stations, 27 reported 'very poor' air quality. In contrast, Sri Aurobindo Marg maintained relatively better conditions, with an AQI around 168. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) categorizes AQI levels above 401 as 'severe' and those between 301-400 as 'very poor.'
Implementation of GRAP Stage-2
Following the worsening air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management activated GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) Stage-2 on Sunday night. This stage enforces strict measures, including a ban on diesel generators, increased parking fees, and allowing only CNG or electric buses from other states to enter the city. The first stage of GRAP had already been in effect since October 14.
Limited Use of Green Firecrackers Permitted
In light of a recent Supreme Court ruling, the use of green firecrackers has been permitted for a limited time in Delhi-NCR. Under current regulations, firecrackers can only be set off on the day before Diwali and during the festival itself, specifically from 6 to 7 AM and 8 to 10 PM. Environmental experts caution that despite the allowance for green crackers, precautions are essential due to the already high pollution levels.
Weather Conditions in the Capital
According to the meteorological department, the maximum temperature in the capital reached 33.3 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, while the minimum temperature also exceeded average levels. Meteorologists predict light fog on Monday morning, with daytime temperatures expected around 33 degrees and nighttime temperatures near 21 degrees.
Concerns Over Pollution Levels During Diwali
Once again, Diwali in Delhi-NCR is overshadowed by smoke and stringent restrictions, raising concerns among residents as pollution levels have already reached alarming heights before the festival begins. All eyes are now on how quickly government measures will take effect to improve air quality.
